"Across the Universe" Copyright 2007 Alice McMahon White, with design assistance from Teagan White, soft pastel on Kitty Wallis sanded paper, 84 x 36"

From my "White Album" series.

"Across the Universe" was in the works long before I ever heard about the recent movie release. It was inspired by my trip with my daughter to DC in March 17, 2007, last St. Patrick's Day.

So, back in March, we were armed with cameras instead of protest signs, and were just trying to stay awake after all night on the bus, and also trying to stay warm in the high icy winds. But the two of us have been planning this work inspired by our experience since then.

Truly a cooperative work, my girl gladly designed the protest sign, and planned her outfit, picking up activism buttons and the MAKE LOVE NOT WAR t-shirt, even painting her own jeans. And just two weeks ago, she was a stoic and excellent model for my reference photos.

The daisy in her hand is a nod to a shy young woman we met in DC. She never said a word, but passed out single yellow daisies to marchers all day. The rainbow is a symbol for St. Pat's Day, spring, peace stretching across the planet, light coming after the rain, and also for gay rights, as shown on one of the buttons on her jacket. The rainbow is reflected in the puddles at her feet, "pools of sorrow/waves of joy". No blood for oil...

DO see the movie "Across..." my favorite in a long time, and it's not just because I like the Beatles!

Wishing for WORLD PEACE in 2008!

o really...
wow...i really like your art work!

Welcome!!

Traditional art is my favorite...it takes time and you really have to do almost everything yourself, unlike digital which has alot of the computer doing it for you and photography which does it for you and dosn't take long at all. Traditional art is what I call real art!! :highfive:

Thanks for the welcome! My daughter (model for this piece) is on here and she does so much digital work, and truly she spends more time on each piece than I do. She is a great traditional artist also. I have a new appreciation for the digital medium from watching her work. One thing I don't care for though, is the lack of a single unique work, with the artist's hand all over it. Just can't see framing them up to hang on a wall, but amazing to look at on the internet!
